WHO ARE THE DOMINICAN SISTERS?

THE DOMINICAN ORDER

The Dominican Order is a world-wide family comprised of priests, religious Brothers and Sisters. The intials "O.P" are an abbreviation for "Order of Preachers." The practice of preaching, paralleled with its complementary counterpart of teaching, began in the 13th century under Saint Dominic de Guzman of Caleruega, Spain.
THE CONGREGATION OF THE DOMINICAN SISTERS OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY

The Congregation of The Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary was founded in Molo, Iloilo City in the Philippines in 1925 under the vision of Venerable Mother Maria Rosario Arroyo. Responding to various needs, the scope of the Congregation's mission was widened beyond it's original apostolate of prayer and direct service to to the people in the Philippines to serving in missions abroad. MINISTRY IN HAWAII 

At the request of the Most Reverend James J. Sweeney, Bishop of Honolulu, the Sisters arrived in Hawaii in 1964 to help meet the growing needs in the diocese for Catholic school education. The Sisters established St. Elizabeth School, Aiea in 1964; St. Joseph School, Makawao, Maui in 1968; Holy Cross School, Kalaheo, Kauai and St. Catherine School, Kapaa, Kauai in 1969; St. John the Baptist School, Kalihi in 1976. Rosary Preschool in Waipio Gentry was opened in 1987.

MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines, Hawaii Region, are committed to the mission of Jesus and of our founders, as we live out our charism to contemplate and share the fruits of our contemplation(Contemplata et aliis tradere), dedicate ourselves to being authentic witnesses to the truth (Veritas) as we Praise (Laudare), Preach (Praedicare), and Bless (Benedicere). 

We are called to minister to the people through the education/formation of youth, and pastoral and social assistance. We seek to embrace the kaleidescope of cultures and nationalities in meeting global needs, joyfully working independently, sharing our common vision, hopes and dreams.

In response to where we feel God may be calling us to be for the Region and the diocese,

We see ourselves:
  • Engaging in childhood education, education to the disabled, and in all aspects of adult education.
  • Involved in outreach services provided for those imprisoned, homeless and in the hospital and elderly.
  • Facilitating as well as providing facilities for Retreat work.
  • Expressing our creativity through various other services.
